Spring Has Sprung in Morristown
The temperatures may not reflect is quite yet, but spring has definitely arrived in Morristown. Here are some great opportunities to get outside and enjoy some of the wonderful events Morristown has to offer.
The General Longstreet Museum opened for its 7th season on Tuesday, April 2nd. The museum features many new exhibits on this Civil War general’s stay in the area during the winter of 1863-64. For all of you mountain-bikers, the Wildcat Mountain Bike Race will be held at Panther Creek State Park beginning at 8 AM on Saturday, April 21st. This spring race is sure to get you ready for the season. Bring your mountain bike and riding buddies to Morristown, TN for one of the toughest and most exciting bike races on the calendar. Nestled around a finger of Cherokee Lake, Panther Creek State Park presents a rural playground for mountain bikers and trail runners alike. Winding through the State Park, participants will encounter plenty of rocks, roots, and climbing to test their grit. The Wildcat will take participants through the landscape and rugged hills of East Tennessee while exploring this magnificent park. Solo riders and teams will race an 8 mile loop around Panther Creek State Park. Those with the most completed laps will take away top honors. If checking out hand-made arts and crafts is more your thing, you’ll want to head to historic downtown Morristown for the 3rd Annual Sky Mart Arts, Crafts, and Makers Festival also on April 21st. Held on Main St., this festival features a treasure trove of hand-made items for purchase, entertainment, and great food. Be sure to visit the wonderful shops in the downtown area as well. When you’ve finished downtown, head over to the Crockett Tavern Museum for its 60th anniversary celebration. Scheduled from 2-5 PM, this free event will include tours of the museum, refreshments, and music. And who knows, Davy himself may make an appearance! If disc golf is more to your liking, check out the Community Disc Golf Day at Frank Lorino Park on Friday, April 27th. Sponsored by Morristown Rotary, Morristown Disc Golf Association, and Morristown Parks and Recreation, this event will feature workshops, demonstrations, contests, and concessions. The event’s hours are from 5-8 PM. If you’ve ever thought about playing disc golf, but didn’t know where or how to start, this event is for you. If you are already a disc golfer, you may be interested in the Morristown Rotary Spring Fling Sponsored by Dynamic Discs. The tournament will be held on Saturday, April 28th on the Rotary courses at Frank Lorino Park. This is a PDGA Pro/AM B-tier event. The Garden Thyme Herb Society’s annual Spring Thyme in the Garden is back for another great year on Saturday, April 28th from 10 AM – 3 PM at Rose Center. This beloved free event features herbs, flowers, vegetable plants, hanging baskets, and yard art and whimsies for sale. May brings even more activities and events to Morristown and the 14th annual Morristown Strawberry Festival events occupy three of the four weekends in the month. The festival celebrates the current year’s strawberry harvest in addition to giving local non-profit organizations the opportunity to raise funds by selling various items at the booths. Following is the calendar of events for the pre-festival events that lead up to festival day on Saturday, May 19th.

Three great bands, one great price! On Saturday, May 12th, Rose Center for the Arts will host the Strawberry Rockin’ Rose Block Party. The event will feature live music from Tom’s Handgun, Tracy Cochran & the Rare Breeds, and Wild Blue Yonder; great food from Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, regional craft beers, corn hole competition, and disc golf closest to the pin competition. Gates open at 4:00 PM and the party wraps up at 10 PM. Tickets are $15/per person and are available at the gate. Please be prepared to present your ID if you plan to purchase beer. Finally, don’t forget that the Morristown Farmers Market opens for the season on Saturday, May 5th. The market is Monday-Friday, 10 AM-5 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. The market opened for early greenhouse plants and baked goods on April 14th.
